Wanaka Tennis Inc President's Report 2016-2017 Season

It is my pleasure to present the Annual Report for the period 1st July 2016 - 30th June 2017.

The club is in great heart.  I found it particularly pleasing that younger members have joined the committee and have introduced initiatives resulting in increased membership, closer links with Queenstown, and playing club championships for the first time.

Juniors’ Achievements
The funds from the Junior fundraising have now contributed to the coaching programs and attendance at tournaments for two full seasons.

The popular Junior squads continue to fill the courts before and after school and contribute hugely to the positive atmosphere at our club.  The tournament squad have been particularly active at regional tournaments and Martha Toghill, Sam Porter, Michael Geologo and Ines Stephanie went on to compete at the Nationals.

Michael and Ines won the mixed doubles National 14&U title.  Ines Stephanie and Michael Geologo, our two high performance players, continue to train for 5-6 days a week.  They have both enjoyed success in Australia.  Ines was a member of the New Zealand 14&U girls' team which won the Australian Teams title for the first time in 15 years.  She was also runner-up in the Australian National Singles final.  We wish her the best for the next five weeks she is spending in Belgium at the Kim Klijsters’s Tennis Academy.  Michael won a 17&U boys' tournament in Sydney with injuries limiting other successes.

Finally, Grant Porter is owed a huge vote of thanks for organising those playing in regional tournaments.

Social Tennis
Social tennis sessions on Monday, Friday and Saturday continue to attract many local and visiting players.  Wednesday evening teams were popular in spring but not enough teams entered in February.  Please respond to Jeannette’s survey to determine whether a new format is desirable.  Men’s A-grade, run on Tuesday evenings by Richard Anderson, has been very successful.  Mixed doubles has again provided competition for our more enthusiastic members.

New Year Tournaments January 2017
The Stonewood Homes Open and Quartz Reef Senior 35+ tournaments both attracted very good entry numbers.  The Fendalton Capital Junior Open still clashes with national events.  However, the tournament was well supported and parents again rated ours the best run tournament in the South Island.

Riki McLachlan won the Men’s Open Singles.  Riki McLachlan and Joshua McDermott won the Doubles.  Emily Fanning won the Women’s Open Singles and teamed with Libby Scott to win the Doubles.

Many of our Juniors won prizes in their various age groups, with Wanaka holding its own against a large contingent from Christchurch in the 35+ tournament.

Southern Lakes Teams
Two Wanaka players played for the vet’s 35+ team which won the South Island Team’s event at Queen’s Birthday Weekend.  We wish the vet’s 50+ team the same success when competing in Dunedin at the start of September.

Grants, Sponsorships and Donations
We are again grateful to Stonewood Homes, Craig’s and Partners and Quartz Reef Wines for sponsoring our January Tournaments; to SPARC for a travel grant of $1000; and Wanaka Experience contributing $1500 to the cost of the motorised court sweeper.

We are particularly grateful to the Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade for donating their spare defibrillator to the club.  This will be located in the foyer of the clubrooms so that it is always available to the public at all times.

Other sponsors of our tournaments included Mediterranean Market, New World Wanaka, Wanaka Beerworks, Central Lakes Physio, and Head NZ.

Membership Fees
Our budget and full committee have recommended fees remain the same for the 2017-18 season.
We ask you to renew your membership(s) by 11 October.  Membership shoe tags will only be issued to paid-up members, otherwise fees of $6 (adult) $2 (between 8 and 17) are due each time you play or are coached.

We need up-dates of email addresses from members who have not received recent communications about club matters.  It is also most important we have dates of birth so we know what fees are due and who is eligible to play in particular tournaments.

Membership forms are available at the club rooms or can be downloaded from our website:
wanaka-tennis.net.nz

Thanks to the 2016-17 Committee
We all benefit from the effort the committee makes to ensure your club runs smoothly.
We thank:

Don Buick for developing and maintaining our website and providing a photographic record of club events.

Stephen May for supervising maintenance of the courts and buildings.

Steven Stephanie and Paul Gardner for co-ordinating the Junior sub-committee,

Dave Buckingham and Grant Porter for running the Saturday morning competition.

Richard Anderson for organising the Men’s A-grade play on Tuesday evenings.

Jeannette Hatten and Rhian Nichol’s fine work as Club Captains in maintaining our programs, organising teams and introducing new ideas.

Jan Grant for looking after health and safety and introducing the defibrillator to the club.

Geoff Hatten for his excellent work as treasurer, introducing shoe tags and increasing membership.

Angela Martin for her hard work as secretary and reminding us of tasks to be done.

Dave Buckingham was recognised for his many years of service to the Wanaka Tennis by naming the grandstand court 6 after him.

Perry Crockett who contributes greatly to the enthusiasm of club members.  He is a particularly fine coach and we thank you, Perry.  It was a pleasure to welcome Libby Scott, a winner of many of our tournaments, to the coaching team.

A huge thank you to those standing down from the committee:

Thank you Rhian for rejoining the committee and assisting Jeannette as co-captain for the past two years.  We are sorry to see you go.

Devon Hotop was outstanding as secretary for 8 years.  She had kept us on our toes with action plans, published newsletters, helped in the kitchen, catering.  We benefitted from her experience in serving the wider community and she was kind enough to stay on committee another year as Vice- President standing in for me during my many absences.  We will miss you at committee meetings but look forward to seeing you regularly on the courts and thank you for offering to help when the occasion demands.

We also need to recognise the great work Anne and Bill Brogden did in keeping our clubrooms looking so good for the past decade.

Finally, thank you to all past committee and other members who are so willing to make themselves available when help is required.  The committee wishes you all a great season of tennis.

Club Captains Report 2016 ~ 2017

This year has involved some great tennis with social tennis being strongly supported on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays.

This year we instituted toe tags for members which were well received and made it much easier to identify members for social tennis and when casual people were playing.  It has also contributed to increasing our membership revenue.

The Christmas tournaments went well thanks to some great organisation and were very popular again.  Our team in the kitchen also helped to make these events a success.

The pre-Christmas Wednesday night social tennis was well supported but the competition after Christmas was cancelled due to lack of support.  An alternative weekly Wednesday night competition was run over six weeks on a casual basis which went well and some prizes were awarded and takeaway dinners were ordered for those who wanted it.  We are looking to restart this competition before Christmas this year but will be asking teams if they want the same format or a different format to previous years.

The Grape Cup was played a few times but did not always take place due to Cromwell not having enough players and on occasion Wanaka could not provide a team.  Wanaka won the Grape Cup and also the mid-winter fixture with Cromwell and took the Man Down Trophy.  This was followed by pleasant lunch out in Wanaka.

After Christmas we finally managed a fixture with Queenstown which was very well patronised and they brought over 6 men and 6 women. There was some great tennis of a high standard and Wanaka won the fixture.  Queenstown are very keen to invite us back but it has not happened yet but their tennis schedule is very busy and their courts are not suitable for a winter fixture.

The annual quadrangular tournament was also held in April with Queenstown replacing South Canterbury.  This was a very enjoyable tournament again with Southland winning this year over Wanaka.  Wanaka provided a few extra players to make up the Queenstown team.

For the first time Rhian and I, with Perry's help, organised club championships which were held in April.  This was a very successful event and the 45 people who entered thoroughly enjoyed their matches.   Many comments were made on what a lovely event it was and spectators came along to watch some great matches.  We had a big age range with everyone from juniors to our most senior members involved. It was a great opportunity to play against our young upcoming players as well as our club coach, Perry.   I know more people will enter next year.
Cups were awarded to the winners.
Singles:
Women: Ines Stephani
Men: Micheal Gealogo
Doubles:
Women: Ines Stephani and Kirstie Langrish.
Men: Perry Crockett and Nev Teat
Mixed Doubles:
Ines Stephani and Michael Gealogo

The Supervets tournament team is all set to go to play in Dunedin on 1,2,3 September.  The team last year struggled with numbers as injuries and a late change in date caused players to withdraw.  This year we have 4 players from Queenstown and our usual 2 men from the West Coast joining us to make up the team of 10 men and 10 women over 50.

I would like to thank Rhian Nicholl for her help for the last 2 years as co-club captain and are sad to see she is stepping down but know we will still see her on the tennis court.

Regards,
Jeanette Hatten

Wanaka Tennis Inc President's Report 2015-2016 Season

It is my pleasure to present the Annual Report for the period 1st July 2015 - 30th June 2016.

Juniors’ Achievements
It has been particularly pleasing to observe the benefits to our young players from the Junior Fundraising 18 months ago.  Our courts have been a hive of activity with before and after school coaching sessions and match play on Saturday mornings.

Every pupil at Wanaka Primary has had 4 lessons and pupils at Holy Family were taught for the first time. Saturday morning match play and development squad coaching twice a week has prepared many for moving on to play their first tournaments around the Southern Region.

The tournament training squad had ten players representing Southern Lakes at the Southern RegionTeam’s event where they came 2nd to South Canterbury.  Michael Geologo, Ines Stephanie and Annie Timu went on to represent the Southern Region at the Nationals.  Seven of the squad enjoyed success in open singles and doubles tournaments during the season.

Ines Stephanie and Michael Geologo, our two high performance players, have been training 5-6 days a week and are both ranked one in their New Zealand tier 2 age group events. Other highlights for Ines were attending the Kim Clijsters Academy in Belgium for 6 weeks before winning her tournament in Brisbane.

Social Tennis
Social tennis sessions on Monday, Friday and Saturday continue to attract many local and visiting players. Wednesday evening Teams are very popular, while men’s A-grade run on Tuesday evenings by Richard Anderson has been very successful.  Mixed Doubles League Tennis has again provided competition for our more enthusiastic members.

New Year Tournaments 2016
The Stonewood Homes Open and Quartz Reef Senior 35+ tournaments both attracted record entry numbers.  The Fendalton Capital Junior Open had fewer players due to clashes with National events.  However, parents were delighted they could watch all the games at the club courts and again rated ours the best run tournament in the South Island.

Connor Heaps won the Men’s Open Singles, Ricky and Ben McLaughlan won the Doubles.  Libby Scott defended her title in the Women’s Open Singles while Emilia Price and Rebecca Dellaway won the Doubles.

Many of our Juniors won prizes in their various age groups, while a large contingent from Christchurch dominated the senior 35+ tournament.

Quadrangular Vets’ Tournament
Wanaka managed to win key tie-breakers to reverse last year’s result against Southland and won the teams event against South Canterbury, North Otago and Southland.

We were unable to repeat last year’s performance in the South Island Tournament in Dunedin due to our top 4 players being unavailable.

Grants, Sponsorships and Donations
We are again grateful to Stonewood Homes, Fendalton Capital and Quartz Reef Wines for sponsoring our January Tournaments, to SPARC for a travel grant of $560 and Wanaka Experience contributing $1000 to the Club.

Other sponsors of our tournaments included Mediterranean Market, New World Wanaka, Wanaka Beerworks, Central Lakes Physio and Head NZ.

Membership fees
Our budget and full committee have recommended a fee increase after several years of little or no increase. This is mainly due to cover Tennis NZ affiliation fees of $16 which are charged for all players once they reach 12 years of age.

We ask you to renew your membership(s) by the end of October.  Membership shoe tags will only be issued to paid-up members, otherwise fees of $6 (adult) $2 (between 8 and 17) are due each time you play or are coached.

We need up-dates of email addresses from members who have not received recent communications about club matters.  It is also most important we have dates of birth so we know what fees are due and who is eligible to play particular tournaments.

Membership forms are available at the club rooms or can be downloaded from our website:
www.wanaka-tennis.net.nz

Lillian Cruickshank has served the club admirably over the past seven years as treasurer, food and cleaning manager and as a pee-wee coach.
