Club Captain’s Report - 7 May 2018
This has been a very busy month with Queenstown fixture, club champs and Quadrangular tournament on.
The Queenstown fixture went very well and the 12 players we took all loved the tennis.
Although we won 11-1. Many of the matches were decided on super tiebreakers and quite a few sets went to tiebreakers, of which Wanaka won them all.
The club champs went well and there were some great matches. Unfortunately we had smaller numbers than last year as maybe being in the school holidays had an impact or it was just one of those weekends when a lot of people were away. It did enable us to play some consolation plate rounds so people who did enter got a lot of tennis. Maybe next year we should consider running a ‘B’ grade division as well to encourage more people to enter as the feeling is out there that you need to be good to enter, but most of us enter knowing we are not going to win.
Unfortunately the weather did not play ball for the Quad tournament and we only managed to play Sunday morning. A big thanks has to go to John Lyness who was continuously keeping an eye on the weather and managed to put together a draw for Sunday with smaller numbers and shortened games and also got the barbecue organised. Our visitors enjoyed having some tennis.
There are no scheduled events now over winter except for regular social tennis. The Grape Cup has not been contested. The Man Down Trophy played against Cromwell may be played at the end of June, but we are waiting to hear from Cromwell.
I am working toward putting together the team for the Supervets tournament in Dunedin in the last weekend in August.
I had a meeting with some junior parents from the squads last Tuesday night which was very successful and I have sent the minutes to all committee members. We are working towards the weekend after Labour Weekend - 28, 29 October. We are waiting to hear that this date does not clash with anything and works for the juniors. We are working on getting the courts for this time and once these two things are in place we can move forward. Although I am away until 27th June I will continue to work on this.
Super Vets Tournament in Dunedin
Please email me if you keen to be in this 3 day tournament. It starts at 9am on Friday 31st August and finishes at lunchtime on Sunday 2 September. Players need to be over 50 for our team (and half need to be over 55 years of age, but it generally works out). Let me know if you will want accommodation as some of us get together to sort this out. We came second last year and will hope to do well again this year, by hopefully getting a few Queenstown players, as the team is a Southern Lakes Team.
Please email me if you are keen to be in this team. I have talked to a few of you about your availability but would like you to email me details as well.
Regards,
Jeanette Hatten - Club Captain

Club Captain’s Report - Doug Clarke
It seems a long time since Vicky Jones and Nigel Buckingham won the George Morris Memorial Trophy on the opening day of this last season.
Congratulations to Perry for his doubles win in the Wanaka Men’s Open.
Wanaka retained the Grape Cup albeit by two games. Thank you to all who played.
The Wednesday night competition was fully booked on the first available day, 8A grade and 6B grade teams taking part. It was as competitive as ever with 4 of a Kind winning the A grade by two points from Quick Service captained by Helen May. The B grade was won by Dougie’s Doddery Dodgers from Hit and Miss. A big thank you to Sue Thompson for supplying us her wonderful wines for the prizes.
Social tennis 10 am - 12.30 pm, Monday and Friday remains popular even with the cold weather and there are usually up to 4-5 courts operating on both days - unless it's inversion!!
Tuesday men’s tennis appears to be flourishing again but still room for more players. Join us from 3 pm onwards.
Likewise Sat afternoon has both regulars and visitors from 1 pm - 4 pm All welcome.
Looking forward to seeing court 5 being re-surfaced for next season as this will help some of us with older legs.
Good luck to juniors Ines, Michael and Rory in their tournaments in Australia this month.

Club Captain’s Report Nov 2013
I am very proud to have become Wanaka Tennis Club Captain and hope I can carry on the good work of previous captains.
Wednesday night tennis commenced on the 16th October 2013, with just one hiccup which was resolved on the night. It has been enjoyable for all participants judging by the laughter and applause heard each evening. We've also been blessed by the weather gods; essential that this continues as our 9th and final night is 11th December.
Don Buick has put a lot of time and effort into organizing the competition and should be commended.
The competition is now in full swing and proving to be very competitive with virtually all the top players competing. We have 9 A grade teams and 5 B grade teams, which is not the easiest of numbers to work with. For the Feb round we'll be having an even number of teams in each grade.
The Grape cup started on the 3rd of November, with Wanaka fielding two teams of two men and two women.

Club Captain’s Report November 2012
Rhian Nicholl - Club Captain
1. Wednesday night mixed doubles
12 teams entered - 8 A grade and 4 B grade in this October round. The winners of the A grade were Top Spin captained by Sandy McKay and Bonny Teat. Lindy Gowing’s team Highly Strung won the B grade. All are happy with new rules and conditions. Non- members are now aware of the $6 charge per night. Rhian sends and gives verbal reminders to Captains who have non-members in their teams. Some will pay as they go, some will pay at the end. The next round of Wednesday evening mixed doubles will start after the school holidays. Look out for the advert in The Messenger.
2. Social Tennis
Well attended, Monday and Friday 9am - 12pm. Anyone can join in, there is friendly atmosphere and visitors are most welcome to join in.
3. Saturday Social Tennis 1pm - 4pm
Continues to go well. There have been record numbers this season including 30 on one Saturday. Good to see some of the ‘new’ players who play on Wednesday are now coming on Saturday. Players on Saturday experience a good level of play. As the weather gets warmer we’ll hang around for drinks and nibbles afterwards.
4. Tuesday Night Men’s Tennis 5pm onwards
Join the men from 5pm on for an enjoyable evening’s tennis and a beer afterwards.
5. The Grape Cup - Cromwell
The Grape Cup vets competition has started up again. We play every other Sunday from now till April. A car load of 2 ladies and 2 men head down to Cromwell for a few hours of good tennis and a ‘share a plate’ afterwards. We play several teams from Central Otago. The atmosphere is friendly with a hint of competitiveness! Christmas party on 9th December at the club for those who have played this round. Competition restarts in February, 2013. If anyone (over 35) is interested in playing then please let me know. Give it a go!
6. Look out for the re-instated “Club Ladders” for women, men and mixed (coming soon).
