Important Dates in the History of the Wanaka Tennis Club
1908 First
established as the Pembroke Tennis Club, with R. M. (Charles) Turnbull as first
President. 1910 Leased
Library Reserve land (off 1930 Moved
to the Showgrounds where 2 concrete courts had been laid down by the Domain
Board; resurfaced with asphalt. 1931 Leased
Showground courts; grand Opening Day on Labour Weekend. 1934 Pavilion
built. 1931-45 Teams
involved in Vincent Competitions during summer months, but a gradual decline in
numbers took place over the war years. New Year's Day Tournament a regular event. 1967 Moved
to the Primary School ( 1972 Written
Agreement reached with the Primary School to share courts and maintenance costs. 1972-85 Interclub
Teams involved in Vincent Competitions, with some Junior coaching by Club
Members. 1986 The
arrival of Lynn Cowie saw an immediate revitalisation of all activities. The
Scoular Cup won by the Senior Team for the first time, with Junior Coaching from
1987 New
Year's Day Open Tennis Tournament held for the first time. Club began using 4
asphalt courts at 1987-95 A
gradual increase in numbers saw both Senior and Senior Reserve Teams involved in
Vincent Competitions. Most tennis now played at 1997 Club
adopted a Constitution and became an Incorporated Society. 1998 Junior
Coaching reactivated at both the Primary School and 2000 First
2 Astrograss courts laid down; Opening Day on April 1st celebrated with a buffet
breakfast and auction with Onny Parun as guest speaker. 2001 Pavilion
Buildings purchased from Dunedin Electricity and installed by Club
members. Construction of additional 3 Courts begun. 2002 2
further Astrograss and 1 Synpave (hardcourt) Courts completed. James McGavin
appointed Club Coach. 2003 January
