Inaugaral Classic Lake Wanaka Tennis Tournament A Great Success
The tournament held over the weekend was a great success which started with a cocktail evening and registration at Jan Grant's house. The cocktails were strong & he food was great. Saturdays weather although a little cold at times stayed fine and there was some great tennis featuring many fierce battles. At some of the courts our juniors were ball girls/boys which was lovely. Delicious morning and afternoon teas were also provided with baking mainly provided by our junior families.
After two rounds of tennis which included four matches, players headed to the tennis club where some of our juniors were playing. This was followed by a short singles match between Perry Crockett and Al Hunt and then these two took on the Queenstown coaches, Mark Milburn and Bjorn Pollock. Encouraged by the crowd the Queenstown coaches prevailed. Following this was dinner at the club and a small auction of various items.
Sunday again stayed fine for us with great tennis, and lunch in the garden of our president, John Lyness. Prizes were presented to the winning team, Mt Awful (all of the teams were named after mountains) consisting of Bruce Scott, Paul Gardner, Grant Porter (and Gary Tate), Joan Harnett-Kindley (and Barbara Provan), Janey Kuzma from Wanaka and Sarah Patterson, Leisa Hart and Graeme Jarvis from Queenstown.
A big thank you goes to all our court owners - the Blennerhassetts, the Kindleys, the Shepherds, the Kings, the Sideys and the Sommervilles - for letting us use. Thank you to all the helpers who organised, prepared food, did court duties, found auction prizes and other donated goods.
The whole event seemed to happen seamlessly.
