Remembering Mike Heiler
Sad news, club member Mike Heiler who was an avid men's player at the club has recently passed away. Mike had been battling cancer for quite some time. Mike was one of the founding members, & a key figure in building & promoting our popular Tuesday night men's casual (social) bash. He was also a competitive doubles player partnering with club member & good friend Ian Jurczyluk in numerous tournaments including our club champs, & our Wanaka Open in January. Mike was laid back, easy going, greatly admired & well respected by all who knew him.
On behalf of the Wanaka Tennis Club, I'd like to extend our deepest condolences to Mike's wife Turid, his three sons, Nick, Tim, & Dan, & to his many friends, & family.

Southern Lakes Tennis Association Senior Doubles Fundraising Tournament
Please read attached files about the Southern Lakes Tennis Association Inaugural Senior Doubles Fundraising Tournament. This will take place on Saturday 27th March at the Wanaka Tennis Club and is an all day tennis tournament with a very nice lunch, morning tea and auction and great tennis. There are two grades in each of the men's doubles and women's doubles. The formal establishment of the Southern Lakes Tennis Association is new and involves Queenstown, Wanaka and Clyde. This association has existed but not with a committee, bank account, etc. The Southern Lakes juniors have just been to Dunedin and the Under 10's won and the Under 12's and Under 14's came second. When our players go to the Queens Birthday tournament and the supervets tournament our players are representing Southern Lakes.
The cost is $50 per person ($100 per team) plus a silent auction prize.
This should be a lovely day with tennis for everyone - see attached flier for entry.
Regards,
Jeanette Hatten.

Remembering Bruce Scott
Bad news has come from out of North Canterbury where Bruce Scott has unfortunately passed away. Bruce suffered a heart attack while he & his wife Jacquie were tramping & fishing near Nelson. Being one of our senior men's players, Bruce was also a competitive golfer, squash player, skier, footballer, beer drinker, & of course, fisherman. A very knowledgeable, talented & noble sportsman in general.
Bruce owned a comically brash personality which was complemented very well by simultaneously being very enthusiastic, pragmatic & magnanimous. Bruce naturally had that spark that would improve anyone's day. He was a born entertainer & the life of the party. Always very composed, relaxed & never seemed to be in a rush, both on & off the court. A natural when it came to ball striking, shown most notably by his solid traditionally taught serve, & volleying technique. Both of which are lacked by the majority of players in todays game.
Wanaka Tennis Club would like to formally extend their condolences & best wishes to Bruce's wife Jacquie, brother Les, family, friends, & relatives.

Remembering Don Buick
The club would like to acknowledge the passing of fellow club member & Wanaka Tennis Club Website Developer, Don Buick.
Don had been experiencing various health issues for some time however was still a regular attendee at weekly social bashes & was the driving force behind setting up & launching the Wanaka Tennis Club website, as well as assisting with ground maintenance, fund raising, & being a long standing committee member. Don was enthusiastic, cunning, genuinely light hearted & a well spirited person who loved to laugh & offer his assistance at the drop of a hat. A passionate photographer, Don was a key & essential part of club promotion & advertising club funded events.
Don was a charismatic tennis player who strived to improve his ball striking ability every time he stepped onto court. Gracious in victory or defeat, he was one of very few players who carried the correct mentality into his matches.
Wanaka Tennis Club would like to formally extend their condolences & best wishes to Helen Millar (Don's partner), Don's family, friends, & relatives at this difficult time.

Dave Buckingham honoured on Sunday 23 April 2017 by naming of court

Patron Jill Blennerhassett stands with Dave beside the centre court sign acknowledging his huge contribution to the Wanaka Tennis Club. Dave was 'lured' to the Club on Sunday, following the completion of the quadrangular teams tournament held over the weekend. Many of the visiting players from further south were also able to acknowledge Dave's contribution to tennis in Dunedin and the Wanaka Experience. Emails from well-wishers unable to attend were also read. Marg Young entertained us with tales from Dave's past. Dave was eventually given right of reply.
President for 12 years, Dave has been the driving force behind the tennis complex which is the envy of our many visitors. He continues to encourage younger players and regularly manages social tennis.
Due largely to his enthusiasm and vision we have an excellent coach and young players performing well at a national level.

NEW ZEALAND WINS 17S AT QLD TEAMS CARNIVAL
Michael wins the 17's boys singles and teams event!

14th December 2016, Tennis Queensland reports:
In their first trip to Australia to compete in the Queensland Teams Event, New Zealand has stopped Metropolitan A from a dominant clean-sweep of all age groups at the popular tournament.
Metropolitan A won the 11's, 13's and 15's events – with New Zealand taking out the 17's. “I’ve had lots of fun and made some new friends. I like how you play as a team because tennis is an individual sport” said Antonia Lawson from the New Zealand team.
At 14, Lawson had an impressive tournament playing up an age group. “I came runner up in the 17's and under girls singles and won the 17's teams event. In the teams event I was down 3-1 and thought gosh I need to win this and I won 6-3.”
Michael Gealogo also played for New Zealand, and won the 17s boys singles as well as the teams event.
“We played Metro A who are really good, in the pool we lost 6-2 to them and in the final we got to choose our format and somehow we got through,” he said. “I like everything about the tournament really I never get to come to Australia so it was fun.”
60 teams played in the carnival from NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and for the first time, New Zealand.
The full list of results for the teams event is as follows:
Event Winner Runner Up
11/u Metro A Metro B
13/u Metro A Gold Coast A
15/u Metro A Metro B
17/u New Zealand Metro A

Ines Wins Girls 14's Masters Final in Wellington at Labour Weekend 2016

The New Zealand Junior Masters were played at Labour weekend in Wellington which is for the top 8 players in their age groups. Ines Stephani won the Girls 14's masters final after beating Ana Tamanika 6-4 6-4. Unfortunately Michael Gealogo was injured and had to withdraw.
Perry reports:
"This is certainly exciting news. I would think this is biggest singles title a player from Wanaka has ever won. This is a significant win for a player from southern let alone Wanaka. I think the last southern player to win a title this big was Libby Scott 16's nationals and then after that you are going back to Ben and Riki."
Wanaka Tennis Newsletter - 23 March 2016, from Devon Hotop
From the President, John Lyness
From the President, John Lyness
I would like to extend a warm welcome to Aspiring Tennis Academy’s new coach John Rogers and his daughter who is a very talented player.
It has been particularly pleasing to see the club so busy with juniors playing and being coached regularly, due to the generosity of our community in the fundraiser last March, organised so ably by Doug Clarke, Grant Porter, Paul Gardner and their team of parents are doing a great job with the Saturday morning junior competition. We are delighted so many juniors are participating in the Southern Region tournaments and that Ines Stephanie and Michael Geologo are achieving well at national level events.
We were relieved when Steven May returned from overseas to cope with many maintenance issues arising from the age of the clubrooms first erected 16 years ago.
Dave Buckingham continues to keep a close eye on the club and we congratulate him on his 80th birthday on Sunday 20 March. We celebrated the occasion at Monday morning social tennis with a cake and impromptu lunch.
We owe a vote of thanks to the catering team: Janey Kuzma, Lillian Cruickshank and Devon Hotop who ensured our three January Tournaments were successful.
We had increased entries in the Stonewood Open and the Quartz Reef Senior 35+, but fewer in the Fendalton Junior Tournament which clashed with national events for the region’s top players. Thank you Mark Harry, Paul Gardner and Trevor Scott for your generous sponsorship's.
Jeannette Hatten and Rhian Nichol are keeping our established club competitions running smoothly, while Richard Anderson has started up a men’s A-grade group on Tuesday evenings.
I would like to remind you all that up to date club information and photos can be viewed here on our website due to Don Buick’s hard work, and Helen Millar for publicity.

Tuesday Men's Programme – Richard Anderson
Over the summer months there have been 2 rounds of men’s tennis being played on a Tuesday night. Men’s B grade tennis is played from 3-5 pm and A grade 6-8 pm.
Over the last few months A grade tennis has been attracting up to 16 players a night. Most nights doubles are played where players are drawn from a hat. Depending on the numbers matches generally consist of one set played in a short round robin competition where it may take 2 or 3 sets to find an overall winner.
Following the conclusion of the tennis, players are encouraged, where possible, to stay around for a drink and a catch up. The 6:00-8:30 pm format works well for those who have full time jobs and/or young families.
Depending on demand and feedback, men’s A grade tennis will run until the end of day light saving and B grade 4-6 pm for some months yet.
Social Tennis is open to all members and non- members at a cost of $2 for members and $6 for non-members.
For more information: A grade contact Richard Anderson on 027-208-5198
B grade contact Steve May on 021-0211-6230

Junior Programme
Paul Gardner, Grant Porter, Steven Stephani – Junior Subcommittee
021-472-984 021-447-268 021-0268-8163
This a letter from Coach Perry Crocket to all parents and sponsors which will illustrate how the junior programme is progressing!
Dear Wanaka Junior Tennis Supporter,
it is coming up to 12 months since the wonderful champagne breakfast fundraiser held at the Wanaka Tennis Club to raise funds for junior tennis and we thought it was a good time to update you on the progress we have made thanks in a large part to your support. The funding has been carefully considered and spread to support a range of junior tennis players and I have outlined below some of the key programmes which are being supported.
Tennis in Schools and Club Taster Days
In term 4, 2015 we coached every pupil at Wanaka Primary School for four lessons and thanks to our tennis in schools funding we were also able to reach out to teach the kids at Holy Family for the first time. We then held a free tennis taster session on a Saturday morning at the tennis club to introduce some of the kids to playing club tennis. We have been able to help a couple of families to keep their kids improving their tennis by funding their term group coaching classes.
Saturday Junior Match Play
Grant Porter and his team of parent helpers have been doing a fantastic job getting the kids into introductory match play on a Saturday morning so that there is a platform for them to take the skills they have learned at coaching into friendly competition. It has also proven to be a great stepping stone for kids moving on to playing in their first tournaments. Grant & Sarah Holmes have been fantastic organising groups of Wanaka players to go away to tournaments around the southern regions. One of the challenges we face being a little isolated in Wanaka is that we don’t have interclub tennis and it is a long way to travel for tournament play. So it has been great to have keen families taking their kids and others away to tournaments and making a really fun trip out of it. Dave Buckingham & Lillian Cruickshank have also been taking some of the really young starter players for some basic skills sessions which are a great introduction to tennis at no cost.
Funded Development Squads
These squads have been taking place in the mornings before school for the most enthusiastic and talented kids in our group coaching classes. They train twice a week in the mornings as a complement to what they are doing in the afternoons and weekends. This has produced some great results in competitions including Max Porter winning in the under 10s at the Oamaru Junior Open and the 9/U singles and the 10/U doubles at the Otago Open. Several kids including George Holland (8), Oscar Crowe (8), Nat Warburton (9), Will Prior (11) and Amelia Holmes (11) participated in their first major Open Tournaments. This is a big step from playing tennis at the club and made possible through the extra training they have been able to attend thanks to the club funding.
Funded Tournament Training Squads
This group of players also trains twice a week in subsidised squad sessions before school. These players are already playing in open tournaments around the region and representing Southern Lakes and the Southern Teams Event and in some cases Southern Region at the Nationals Teams Event. This yearInes Stephani, Michael Gealogo and Annie Timu represented Southern at the Nationals and these players along with Martha Toghill, Holly Gibson, Jake Nicholson, Angus Cagney, Thomas Masters, Sam Porter and Jack Timu were selected to represent Southern Lakes at the Southern Region Teams Event. The Southern Lakes team placed a respectable 2nd behind South Canterbury, beating Otago, Southland and North Otago. Some highlights in regional Open Tournaments came with Martha Toghill winning the 12's singles at the Queenstown and Wanaka Opens and teaming up with Holly Gibson to win the 12's doubles at the Wanaka Open and all of their matches at the Southern Teams Event. Jake Nicholson played brilliantly to win the consolation singles in the 14's at the Otago Open. Sam Porter recently won the Otago Open 12/U Doubles title and finished 3rd in two satellite tournaments in Southland.
High Performance Support
A portion of the funding at the club has been used to support our two high performance players Ines Stephani (13) and Michael Gealogo (13). Both have continued to work extremely hard training 5-6 days a week and travelling to tournaments around New Zealand and Australia. It has been a challenging year for both stepping up into their first year in the 14 and under age group.
Ines had another great campaign in her first year at 14 and under Nationals. She lost to New Zealand representative Emma Miyaura in the opening round of the main draw, but recorded several strong wins to take out the consolation including beating Amily Suga who is the 3rd ranked NZ player in Ines’s year group in the final. Ines also teamed up with Australian based Kiwi Monique Barry to make it to the final of the main draw doubles, narrowly missing a National Title losing 6-4, 7-6 in the final. It is the second year Ines has made the Nationals Doubles Final having lost in a tie break in the 12s in 2015. With another whole year in the same age group we hope she can go one better next Nationals.
Ines had an incredible run at the National Teams Event winning 4 out of 5 matches playing number one for Southern. She beat 2 NZ top 10 players who were all in the year group above her which is an incredible effort. Ines is currently ranked 12th in NZ for 14 and under and 5th in her year group. Ines won the 14s singles at the Auckland Championships, Southern Intermediate Schools Champs, Wellington Spring Open and the Otago Spring Open and won her first Australian Title in the doubles in a major state tournament in Melbourne.
Michael was able to win the North Otago Open, the Southern Intermediate Schools Championships and was runner up in the Southern Junior Indoor Championships. He also recorded some great results in the National Teams Event including a narrow 3 set loss to Jamie Garbett who was seeded 3 at the 14's nationals.
Michael will embark on an increased tournament schedule for 2016 as he aims to make Tennis NZ Masters Top 8 tournament again. In recent weeks Michael has had a hot run of form winning the Southland Open in the 18/U age group and the Otago Open in the 14's where he faced strong opposition in the final and won 6-2 6-0. Michael is currently ranked 14th in NZ for 14/U and 6th in his year group where just 10 ranking points separate players ranked 3-6.
Both Ines and Michael played for Southern Lakes senior teams this year going undefeated in their singles matches against adult opponents.
A portion of the funding will also be used to support Ines and Michael in their efforts to reach the Masters Top 8 event again this year. This is a special tournament just for the top 8 players based on results in high category events throughout NZ. They will be on the road for a lot of March and April as many of the key events around the country are during these months. We wish the every success in reaching this goal. On behalf of the junior tennis families who have benefited from your generous support these past 12 months and who will continue to benefit in the coming year, I would like to say a great big thank you, and we will keep you updated on our progress.
Sincerely,
Perry Crockett - Coach

It is a pleasure and a privilege to contribute to this newsletter. Because I function simply as a club figurehead, fortunately you do not expect me to make new and profound observations; on the other hand, I am allowed to comment on things that delight me as I have seen this club that you have all, in various ways, helped develop over the years, build to its present strength. I continue to be thrilled with the way that our club is performing.
We enjoy such competent and enthusiastic coaching, as well as parents who encourage and assist. Tennis is being introduced as a structured sport into primary schools, while it continues to be supported at our club (which has been a primary aim since our inception), both for our general and also for our elite young players.
We have always enjoyed great community support -our recent fund-raising breakfast raised $30,000 to support our young competitive aspirants.
Visiting players from overseas have always enjoyed our hospitality; many come back year after year for this ‘special’ brand of social club tennis.
This is a great and friendly club.
Jill Blennerhassett.

29/07/15 - Sad news - Leigh Snape from Scotland has died.
We have just received the sad news that Leigh Snape has died in Scotland after fighting cancer for a year.
Leigh and Dougie, from Scapa Flow, are a delightful couple who spent the summer months here in Wanaka and a lot of that time on the courts having fun and adding to the life of the club. How we enjoyed them!
It was while Leigh was here that she was diagnosed with cancer. We have been thinking about them over these last months.
Typical of Leigh’s indomitable spirit was that 3 weeks before she died she swam 1 km for a fund raising event for the Madame Curie Charity and raised $1,000!
A message of sympathy and support from the club will be sent to Dougie and family. We realise how much Leigh will be missed by all who knew her.

Dear members,
we are all shocked and devastated at the death of one of our members, Rosemary Lamb, on Sun 1 Feb.
Rosemary was a very enthusiastic tennis player and her cheerful bubbly nature made her very popular with members and fun to play with or against. She represented our club and Southern Lakes at super vets events in Dunedin.
She passed on her enthusiasm for our sport to her children Will, Richard and Charlotte, and our thoughts and sympathy are with them at this time.
Wednesday Night Social Teams still took place on 4 Feb, with players assembling before play to reflect on Rosemary's life and contribution to our club.

We are already halfway through winter and I hope even our skiing members are also enjoying their winter social tennis at the club.
I was privileged to see our 3 star juniors Cory, Inis and Michael practising 5 hours a day at the Kawana Waters, Perry’s old club on the Sunshine Coast. We wish them well as they prepare for tournaments in Ipswich and Brisbane this week. Judging from what I saw they face formidable competition with 112 boys and 59 girls in the 12’s event.
Southern Lakes performed well in the 35+ teams event in Dunedin during Queen’s Birthday weekend coming second overall to Canterbury.
Our club is co-ordinating the Southern Lakes team to compete in the super-vets 50+ team’s event being held on the freshly re-surfaced courts at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin on Friday 5 Sept - Sun 7 Sept. Eight Wanaka players thoroughly enjoyed participating last year so put these dates in your diary now and let me know if you would like to play.
As you will note from the coming events, September will be a busy month. In addition, we are having court 5 re-surfaced the same as courts 1 and 2 in time for our opening day and AGM Oct 11 and Wed social teams starting Oct 15.

As the 2013-14 season draws to a close it’s a good time to reflect on what has made it another memorable one for the club. Some reporting of results and achievements follow in this newsletter, however a full précis will appear in our Annual Report.
The clubs playing successes are due to the dedication of our coaches and the willingness of parents to support both them and their children. All of our tournaments were deemed a success, simply because members unselfishly volunteered their time to assist in every facet of tournament management.
Your club has a number of generous benefactors who support the junior coaching programme, making it possible to give our juniors every opportunity to achieve in the sport.
We also receive generous sponsorship from a number of local winemakers and business houses in our area. This of course adds up to keeping subscriptions at a manageable level and allowing improvements to our complex.
You can be justifiably proud of your elected committee who have the “can do’ attitude, and who, without fanfare, prudently manage the affairs of the club. The committee’s focus is to provide the membership and the community with the best facilities available to enable all of us to enjoy the game of tennis.
Accordingly we look forward to the new season and the upgrading of court five with a Tiger Turf Elite Astrograss surface.
The club does not function by its self, please give some thought to putting your name forward for committee selection in the coming season.

Junior Programme - Steven Stephani
With winter on our doorstep we can look back on another good tennis season for our junior players. We can see a lot of enthusiastic juniors every day on our courts and also our coaching program is helping our players to get some fantastic results in tournaments & competitions and this resulted in 3 of our juniors (even 5 if you also take into account 2 players who have left us to go to boarding school) being selected to represent the Southern Region in the Nationals Teams Event. Not bad for a small club as Wanaka!
These results are only possible by hard work: juniors who are prepared to invest a lot of time in their tennis future, a coach who is prepared to spend a lot of his time in our kids’ tennis future and a club who is prepared to help our juniors with their tennis future. Without all of this we would never be able to achieve the results we are seeing now.
We hope we will be able to follow the road we have taken and can keep investing in the development of our junior players as they are the future of our club.
Winter season will be for most juniors a cooling down period, but 3 of our top juniors are heading to Australia with our coach Perry for a tennis training camp followed by 2 tournaments in Brisbane the end of June.
I would like to end with saying try to keep playing as much as possible during winter and I hope to see you all back next season.

Dear members,
The weather just keeps getting better for tennis and there are still plenty of opportunities to play since the great finale to our Wednesday social teams. Thank you Doug and Don for co-ordinating this popular competition.
Thank you to those members who turned out to entertain a group of Australian vets touring with Ian Jones and especially to Janey and Lillian who prepared such a superb barbecue lunch.
The Grape Cup final round was played in Cromwell last Sunday with Cromwell enjoying a win after several close matches. However, Wanaka has retained the Cup by just 2 games after a whole season’s play. Well done Doug for ensuring the continuing success of this vet’s competition which is played with such good spirit.
We are again hosting a quadrangular vet’s(35+) teams tournament on the 12-13th April. Teams of 6 women and 6 men play doubles and mixed doubles against teams from Wanaka, Sth Canterbury, Nth Otago and Southland. It is played in a round robin format all day Saturday and Sunday morning followed by a barbecue lunch. We need 12 for our own team and some extra players to supplement visiting teams if necessary. Please contact our Club Captain, Doug Clarke, if you would like to participate: email dougclarke@me.com
Otago seniors are running their senior 35+ tournament – the equivalent of our January Quartz Reef Tournament the weekend of 5-6th April at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin. Men’s, Women’s and mixed doubles are played in 3 categories. A grade, B grade and combined ages 110+. The entry forms are attached. If you are wanting to play, please let John Lyness know by phoning him on
03-443-7500 or by emailing jlyness@xtra.co.nz in case others wish to co-ordinate transport, accommodation and possible playing partners.
All social tennis continues at the normal times Monday, Friday 9 am -12 pm, Saturday 1-4 pm and Men’s from 4 pm Tuesday.
We look forward to seeing you on the courts.

A new season has started and some of our juniors already had some great results. Martha Toghill (Girls 10's), Michael Gealogo (Boys 12's) & Ines Stephani (Girls 12's) just won the Queenstown Junior Open in their age groups and the 3 of them also qualified for the South Island Primary & Intermediate School Championship which will be played in Christchurch on the 2nd and 3rd of December. These results don’t come easy. A lot of our players are very dedicated and spend hours on the tennis courts practising, and practising, and practising.
Wanaka Tennis Club is now running for the 3rd year a funded tennis programme. As you can see we are getting some great results and have some Juniors who are competing with the top of NZ Juniors. To keep up with our efforts we unfortunately need some extra funds, so if people or companies are interested in working together with our Juniors and help to develop them further, please contact one of the committee members and we are happy to see what can be done.
Looking ahead it seems there is a very busy summer season coming with tournaments and events all over the South & North Island. Some dates to remember:
2 & 3 December: Finals for the South Island Primary & Intermediate School Championships
19 to 23 December: ASB Canterbury Junior Classic in Christchurch
5 to 8 January: Wanaka Junior Open
You are all invited to come and support our juniors at our own Junior Open and watch some of our future stars in action!

The web site is now up and mostly running thanks to Wendy & Morgan for designing the layout. Some tabs still need information loaded, but all essential info of how the club works, tournament dates, recent newsletters and some photos are there. We'd love to hear from budding reporters present at tennis events, with articles and photos, or interesting historic material. Keep up to date for information about club activities by visiting our website - even works on smart phones for many of the pages.

At Wanaka Tennis Inc we take patriotic duties, such as raising the flag, very seriously. Dave Buckingham has admirably performed this duty, but at the end of October he required the assistance of the next generation viz Nigel Buckingham, so the flag could be raised.
This required Nigel to scale the tennis court fence, armed only with BBQ tongs, and retrieve the delinquent halyard.
Commendations for bravery all round!

Message from the President - John Lyness
Our new season has started well. A record number participated in our opening day George Morris Memorial fun tournament, 14 teams are competing vigorously on Wednesday nights with many close matches, and we now have two teams competing in the Grape Cup.
We welcome two new members to our committee. Team Captain, Doug Clarke and Helen Millar. Doug is keen to see our second round of Wednesday Teams Social start well, so captains please ensure your teams are entered and paid for by 22nd January.
Preparations for the January Tournaments are well under way. All our sponsors from last year are again supporting us and we know we can rely on members to help our committee during a very busy start to the year. We have changed the format from last year.
The Senior Open again comes first from 2nd-4th Jan.
The Junior Open has been split into two, allowing most games to be played at the club courts.
The ‘Veteran’s’ tournament age criteria has been lowered from 40 to 35 and is now the Senior 35+ tournament. The playing categories have been changed to A and B grades and combined ages 120+. These categories will allow more of our middle aged players to participate and allow some mixing of age groups based on ability rather than age defining whom people pair up with and play against.
Entry forms will be available at the clubrooms, have been emailed out to members with known email addresses, and can now be downloaded from our new website, thanks to Don Buick, Morgan and Wendy Allen.
Our Juniors continue to flourish under Perry and Kirstie’s coaching and parental support headed by Steven Stephanie.
The committee wishes all members a joyful and relaxing Xmas and looks forward to seeing you all playing regularly next year.

Autumn - Winter Newsletter 2013
We have enjoyed another great season highlighted by the participation of the Berkley Men’s Team in our January Open on our newly re-surfaced courts 1 & 2.
More recently we had 4 juniors playing in the nationals in Auckland and our veterans hosted South Canterbury, Southland and North Otago to a 2 day quadrangular teams tournament. Wanaka eventually won narrowly after a great weekend of friendly competitive tennis.
With steadily increasing playing numbers and membership up, our financial position is looking good as we approach our winter season. Snow did not deter Perry from coaching hardy members last Tuesday. All social tennis continues, but we do need to keep the rooms secure from the weather during winter. When members are the last to leave, please ensure the changing room windows are shut, lights are off and the exit doors and lounge doors are locked.

The ‘Quartz Reef Bubbly Breakfast’ organised by the junior committee to raise funds for their coaching program was a wonderful occasion. Nev Teat explained how lucky we are to enjoy our current site and the juniors displayed why the under 12 girls in particular have 5 ranked in the top ten for Otago/Southland. Donations to this program target of $15,000 will be effective and much appreciated and are tax-deductable.
Our January tournaments are going to be special this year. We are expecting 16 young players from Brisbane to participate in the juniors and ten members of the men’s tennis team from Berkley to play in our open. The Berkley team is currently ranked 14th in the US intercollegiate competition. They include Ben and Ricky MacLaughlin from Queenstown who are currently studying on tennis scholarships in California.
Our tournaments are the highlight of our calendar and we are grateful to our major sponsors Gallaway Cook Allan, Quartz Reef Wines and Head for their continuing support. We also much appreciate the contributions from all our other sponsors and the generosity of members in assisting at this busy time of year.
The great success of our Wednesday night tennis has highlighted just how many good players are out there and has led to Rhian and Ian setting up singles ladders. Perry and Kirstie’s coaching is obviously paying dividends at all levels.
The committee wishes all members a joyful and relaxing Xmas and looks forward to seeing you all playing regularly next year.

Comments from Vice President – Peter Harridge
By now most members are aware that courts 1 & 2 have been resurfaced. These were the first and only courts laid out in the complex in 2000 and were covered with an Astro Turf Crown surface. The new surface is the “Elite”| brand which has a shorter length of pile but a closer weave and is a superior to the original surface. For your enjoyment the committee has invested heavily in the best playing surface available. To complement the upgrade we have provided two new nets on these courts. We take the opportunity to congratulate our contractor Fulton and Hogan Ltd on an extremely professional job. We are grateful to the Lion Foundation and The Community Trust of Otago for their support in assisting with grants towards the project.
Within the next 2 years, and as funds become available, it is the intention of the committee to address the upgrade of the bitumen surface on court 5. The committee would welcome your input on the type of surface you would prefer. Our tennis nets are exposed to the weather 365 days a year and the odd one has shown signs of deterioration but I am pleased to advise; all nets have now been professionally repaired and re-instated in time for the January Tournaments.
The club rooms are in good repair and new food serving tables have been purchased. We are currently assessing the possibility of erecting a shade cloth over the decking area outside the utility room however funding plays an important part in the decision making process for these desirable luxuries.

Our juniors had a fantastic start of the season so far, with great results in tournaments and events all over the South Island. These results don’t come easy. A lot of our players are very dedicated and spend hours on the tennis courts practising, and practising, and practising… and those of you who were involved in the Wednesday Doubles were able to play against some of these youngsters and I think most were impressed about their level of play.
Wanaka Tennis is trying to help our Juniors to become even better with a coaching programme which we organise together with Perry and Kirstie of Aspiring Tennis Academy, our very dedicated coaches. We are trying to keep the cost of this programme as low as we can and if possible even free! Our juniors are fundraising as much as possible and one of the initiatives was our very successful champagne breakfast a couple of week ago. We would like to thank all of you who bought tickets or gave a donation. We have already raised approximately 1/3 of the necessary funds we need to keep our programme completely free this year. To reach our goal we welcome every further donation, and we would like to point out that these donations are tax deductible. You can contact anyone of the committee should you wish to get more information or are interested in helping us.
I myself would like to thank all the parents who were involved in helping to make this champagne breakfast in the success it was, and a special thanks to all our Juniors who showed their dedication and commitment to our beautiful sport and made this day so special!
Looking ahead it seems there is a very busy summer season coming, with Junior tournaments & events almost weekly happening from now on. We start this weekend with the Queenstown Junior Open and I like to point out our highlight, the Wanaka Junior Open on 2, 3 & 4 of January 2013. You are all welcome to come and support our juniors on these days and see some stars of the future play here in Wanaka.
Coming events for the juniors
8-9 Dec Southern Region Squad Training Camp for 12U Girls in Wanaka
17-21 Dec ’12 Canterbury Xmas Open
2-4 Jan ’13 Wanaka Junior Open
21-23 Jan ’13 Southern Hardcourt Open Timaru
