Wanaka Club Championships 2021
After not being able to play yesterday (Saturday the 10th) the singles and mixed doubles were played today.
There was some great tennis and some people played a lot of tennis.
The women's singles was won by Caroline Reid in a battle with Margo Beattie (score 9-5)
The men's singles was won by Ben Fahy, who beat Will Lamb 9-2.
The mixed doubles was a hotly contested competition with all matches a great standard. Jacque Bates and Tony Marsh beat Sue Thompson and Adam Horan 9-5.
The consolation women's singles was won by Marion Buggins 9-5 over Georgia Lindsay and the men's singles consolation will be played between Roger Boyd and Peter Millar during the coming week.
The consolation mixed doubles was won by Peter Millar and Marion Buggins 9-7 over Roger Boyd and Janey Kuzma.
The men's and women's doubles will now be played on April 24th. I know this will mean some players will not be able to play but there may be other players who can now play. Please re-enter by emailing me within the next week to let me know what you are doing.

Jeanette Hatten.

Southern Lakes Tennis Association
"Wimbledon Whites" Fundraiser Tournament
Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday’s fundraiser for Southern Lakes Tennis Association. The tennis was great and thanks to the Queenstown cooks, Karen Mitchell and Suma Ito, the lunch was superb. Thanks to everyone for providing the auction items which helped us to raise a good amount. Final amount will be advised later.
The men’s doubles was won by Perry Crockett and Graham Beale from Wanaka and the women’s final by Felicity Oxnevad and Teresa Chapman from Queenstown. Looking forward to this event happening next year.
I will put some photos up on Facebook and the website.

Jeanette Hatten.

Perry reels in North Otago Open title
During January, our resident head coach Perry travelled to Oamaru to play the 2021 North Otago Open.
Perry finally won the tournament that had been eluding him for some years having played previously, but seeing his chances being stolen away by bad weather on each occasion. Perry played Johnny McHarg of Canterbury in the final, winning 7-5, 7-5.
The Otago Daily Times published "Southern Lakes' Perry Crockett returns a shot to top seed Johnny McHarg of Canterbury, in yesterdays men's singles final of the North Otago Open. The third-seeded Crockett won the title 7-5, 7-5."
Congratulations, Perry!

Dunedin Super Seniors Tournament ~ 31 August,
1st, 2nd September 2018
The Southern Lakes team consisting of 16 players from Wanaka and 3 from Queenstown came 2nd to Canterbury at the tournament in Dunedin over the weekend.
We beat all the other regions - South Canterbury, Otago, Canterbury Country, and Southland / North Otago.
The final Sunday morning match against Canterbury was for first and second place. After the 8 doubles matches we were 4 matches all. The 8 mixed doubles were to follow. We drew these matches also and it so it came to a count back of games. We lost by 2 games (106-104). An amazing effort.
Our players all played so well and to do this well against Canterbury was fantastic. It was a great three days with some excellent tennis and very interesting results.
Players were Karen Mitchell, Felicity Oxnevad, and James Penwell from Queenstown. Representing Wanaka were Nigel Buckingham, Colin Finnie, Tony Marsh, Bruce Scott, Robbie Julius, Matt Kenealy, James Docking, Allan Martin, Geoff Hatten, Louise Kane, Jacque Bates, Sue Thompson, Barbara Proven, Joan Lloyd, Janey Kuzma and Jeanette Hatten.
A great weekend of tennis.

Club Champs 2018 Report
These were held for the second time over the weekend of 21, 22nd April and again some great tennis was witnessed. We had smaller numbers than last year possibly due to the competition being in the school holidays. Saturday’s wind was a bit of a trial but Sunday was calm, clear, sunny if a little cold first thing.
The men’s singles was won by Jason Parrant who overcame Nigel Buckingham 9-2. The women’s singles was won by Jacque Bates over Margot Beattie with the same score of 9-2. In both these matches the score did not reflect the closeness of the matches and the battle that went on. The men’s doubles was won by Will Lamb and Theo Delbohm 9-5 over Nigel Buckingham and George Taylor. The women’s doubles was won by Jacque Bates and Jeanette Hatten 9-4 who beat Rhian Nicholl and Margot Beattie. Two more hard fought battles with great tennis. The mixed doubles was won by Jacque Bates and Tony Marsh 9-6. They beat Nigel Buckingham and Margot Beattie in an interesting struggle. This year we managed some consolation plates with the men’s singles won by James Docking, the men’s doubles by Paul Gardiner and Mike Hartley, the women’s doubles by Janey Kuzma and Alice Mactaggart and the mixed doubles by Theo Delbohm and Alice Mactaggart. Some people played a lot of tennis over the weekend, but it was enjoyed by all. Regards, Jeanette Hatten. Ph/Txt 021 298 6229 or 03 443 2190 hattenjeanette@gmail.com |
Wanaka Stonewood Homes 2018 Open Tournament
Dominated by Wanaka players, our 15 year old star, Ines Stephanie won both the women’s singles and doubles, beating Megan Rogers 7-5, 6-3, and teamed with Libby Scott to prevail 6-1, 6-0 against the Queenstown pair, Karen Mitchell and Suma Ito. Margo Beattie showed great persistence in both singles and doubles, playing six super tie breakers in 30+ degree heat. Margo and Daphne Ledgerwood won the women’s consolation doubles.
Our coach, Perry Crockett playing with Chris Bradley won the men’s doubles 6-1, 6-4 against number one seeds Ryan Eggers and Paddy Ou, while 15 year old Jamie Garbett from Christchurch looked all class as he prevailed 6-4, 6-4 against Paddy Ou from Dunedin.
Nigel Buckingham and George Taylor won the men’s consolation doubles.
It was particularly pleasing to have so many players from Wanaka both entering as well as featuring in the prize list.

Southern Lakes 2nd at S I Super Seniors Tournament in Dunedin 1-3 Sept 2017
Wanaka Tennis Club members usually make up most of players in this Southern Lakes team, but this year we managed to get some Queenstown Tennis Club members to play, which strengthened our team. The South Island Super Seniors Tournament was held in Dunedin 1-3 September. We came a close second to Canterbury 9-7, a fantastic result.
Of our 19 players, 13 were from Wanaka, 4 from Queenstown, and 2 from the West Coast. The Queenstown contingent was Suma Ita, Karen Mitchell, Teresa Chapman, and John Duffy. Wanaka players were Jacque Bates, Jeanette & Geoff Hatten, Louise Kane, Joan Lloyd, Jenny Chisholm, Jan Grant, Nigel Buckingham, Tony Marsh, Robbie Julius, James Docking, Colin Finnie, and Allen Martin. Richard Wilding and Paul Davidson from Hokitika, who have helped us out for the last few years, completed our Southern Lakes team. Matt Kenealy came along to be our wonderful manager.
The tournament was as usual a lot of fun and very full on with 5 other teams to play against and 16 matches for each tie with doubles and mixed doubles played. The other teams were Canterbury, Canterbury Country, Otago, South Canterbury and a combined North Otago/Southland.

Wanaka Tennis Club Championships ~ 6-7 May 2017
The Wanaka Tennis Club Championships were run for the first time over the weekend of the 6th and 7th May. There were 45 people entered over 5 events. The weather was perfect although a little cold in the mornings. The ages of the participants ranged from 14 to super veterans.
There was great tennis played, the atmosphere was wonderful, and it was great to have a lot of spectators present encouraging the players.
Women's Singles
Ines Stephani (No 6 in Under 16 New Zealand ranking as has just moved into U16 age group - she was No. 1 in U14) beat Melissa Finnie.
Ines showed her superiority in all her singles matches but her various opponents enjoyed pitting themselves against her.
Men's Singles
Michael Gealogo (No. 5 in Under 14 New Zealand ranking) beat Ian Jurczyluk. Ian certainly came to play in the finals and enjoyed battling against the 14 year old, who just kept returning all those shots with angles and speed.
Women's Doubles
Ines Stephani and Kirstie Langrish beat Rhian Nicholl and Jeanette Hatten. The tennis in the finals was great and although Rhian and Jeanette pulled out their best tennis they were no match for the younger pair.
Men's Doubles
Perry Crockett and Nev Teat beat Richard Anderson and Grant Porter, who bowed to the experience of Perry and Nev. The two semi finals were great matches with Perry and Nev beating the youngsters Rory Maclean and Michael Gealogo and in the other semi final Richard and Grant beat Ian Jurczyluk and Will Lamb in a close match which was won in a tiebreaker.
Mixed Doubles
Ines Stephani and Michael Gealogo beat Perry Crockett and Rhian Nicholl. This was a fantastic game with a hint of irony seeing Wanaka's brilliant coach being beaten by his two star pupils.
From start to finish this was a great tournament with some excellent tennis played and consistently entertaining and enjoyable matches.
Even the first round losers were happy having had the opportunity to pit themselves against some of the clubs top players.
Next year's competition promises to be even better!

Report on Dunedin Supervets Tournament held 26-28 August 2016
Jeanette Hatten (Wanaka Tennis Club Captain) reports:
A team of 16 players mostly from the Wanaka Tennis Club have just played in the 3 day Supervets Tournament in Dunedin. We did not win any of the five regional fixtures but we did win some matches and the tennis was really fabulous. There were a few tiebreak matches and some matches even won from behind.
We all had a great dinner out on the Friday night and all came home rather weary after 10 matches each over the three days. We had some injuries before and during the tournament so we did struggle for players.
Team members were:
Joan Kindley, Penny Wilson, Jeanette Hatten, Sue Thompson, Daphne Ledgerwood, Joan Lloyd, Sally Jackways (Otago), Bruce Scott, Robbie Julius, Tony Marsh, Geoff Hatten, Doug Clarke, Dave Haley, Mike O'Connor, Richard Wilding and Paul Davidson (from the West Coast) plus we had a woman and a man fill in for us from Otago to make up our numbers.

Fixtures with Cromwell Tennis: Grape Cup Won by Wanaka - June 2016
The Grape Cup played between Wanaka Tennis Club and Cromwell Tennis Club was won by Wanaka Tennis Club this year but consisted of only three matches this year due to weather and lack of players for specific dates. The final was played at Cromwell on the last weekend in June and was combined with the annual mid-winter competition for the Man Down Trophy. Wanaka won both competitions. Cromwell Tennis Club hosted us for lunch after the tennis.
Players: Rhian and Nigel Nicholl, Jeanette and Geoff Hatten.

Ines and Michael's Great Tournament Tour Results!
Hi All,
Please see from Steven pasted below regarding Ines and Michael's tournament tour. Michael won the Canterbury tournament on the 1st May, 6-2 6-2 beating both of the boys who beat him in the first two events and Ines lost for the first time in the 14's in a close final 7-6 7-5, but won the doubles again.
To give some context these tournaments are Tier 2 which means next biggest after Nationals which is Tier 1 so there are 6 of these events (one per region) for the year.
Excellent results!
Perry
Hi all,
We just finished second tournament out of three, and again got some great results!
Michael got to the semi's in the 14's & under losing to Corban Crowther 6-4 6-2 after a big battle.
Ines got her second title after winning the 14's final against Cayla McInroy 6-1 6-3, and went on to also win the doubles title winning the final 6-3 6-1.
Both also competed in the 16's where Michael reached the 1/4 final, losing against the number 3 seed James Watt (see picture), and Ines got to the semi's only losing 7/5 6/3 against number 2 seed Holly Stewart.
We are now on our way to Chch to play the last of our 3 tournaments.
Cheers,
Steven.
Last results from Christchurch tournament:
- Michael won the Boys 14s after beating William Schneidemann 6-2 6-2 in the final.
- Ines made it to the Girls 14s Single final but lost this time to Amily Suga 7-6 7-5 after another nail biter,
but brought home the doubles title winning the final this time 7-6 7-5.
This means a total of 3 Single titles, 2 doubles titles and 2 Runner-up titles in the 3 tournaments!
Well done!

South Canterbury Senior Tournament - Timaru - 30 April-1 May 2016
Following Wanaka Tennis Club's successful Quadrangular Tournament, an invitation was issued for players to participate in Timaru's tournament (30 April - 1 May).
This was a very enjoyable tournament, with competition in three divisions - A and B Grades and +65 Grade.
Geoff Hatten and I participated in this tournament in both the doubles and mixed doubles. We were partnered with players from other regions in the doubles.
The standard of tennis was very good and the matches were very close, particularly in the mixed doubles. Geoff and I lost our match for the final of the B Grade plate 6-4, 7-6.
There are other regional tournaments happening around the region over winter with Dunedin hosting a tournament over Queen's Birthday weekend and Oamaru at Labour Weekend. Contact me if you wish to take part.

Successful Quadrangular Tournament at Club 16-17 April 2016
Wanaka Tennis Club hosted a very successful quadrangular tournament over the weekend against Southland, North Otago and South Canterbury. The weather held off on Sunday so all games were completed before the rain and the final barbecue.
At the end of Saturday Wanaka and Southland both had two wins against North Otago and South Canterbury.
It all came down to the last mixed doubles match which Wanaka managed to win putting them 7-5 ahead in matches. North Otago beat South Canterbury to take out third place.
There was great tennis played with some very close matches and the odd match that was not so close.
It was a great social weekend with our visitors enjoying our lovely courts and town.

South Island Super Seniors Tennis Tournament, 4-6 Sept 2015
This year's tournament took place in the Edgar Sports Centre (Dunedin) from Friday 4th September until midday Sunday 6th September. Teams taking part were Canterbury, Canterbury Country, South Canterbury, North Otago, and Southern Lakes, with half the players being over the age of 55 years the rest being over 60 years (Canterbury, Canterbury Country, Otago), and half the players being over 50 years and the rest over 55 years (North Otago, South Canterbury Southern Lakes).
Matches consist of doubles and mixed doubles, with 8 men/8 women per team (best of 19 games, tie-breaker 8 all).
The tournament has been in existence for 13 years, since 2003, and is organised by Ian Jones (Canterbury Country).
In past years Canterbury (7 wins) has been the strongest team, followed by Otago (4 wins), with Canterbury Country and North Otago having had 1 win each, but this year our Southern Lakes team, consisting largely of Wanaka Club players, upset the apple cart by displacing Canterbury Country by the slimest of margins (43 sets to 42), coming 2nd overall. Indeed, this is the first time our team has ever won a match, beating Otago (10-6), North Otago (9-7), and South Canterbury (11-5).
Heartiest congratulations to all concerned!
Dave Buckingham
Players for Southern Lakes were:
Women
Jeannette Hatten, Louise Kane, Jacque Bates, Sue Thompson, Joan Lloyd, Janey Kuzma, Brenda Clarke, Dee Nel
Men
Nigel Buckingham, Kobus, Tony Marsh, Phil Nel, Allen Martin, Richard Wilding (West Coast), Paul Davidson (West Coast), Doug Clarke, Dave Buckingham
As you can see Wanaka supplied the bulk of the players. It was a much more enjoyable tournament for us than in previous years as we had a team that could compete.

First tournament was the Gosford Junior Lead-In. Ines made it to the consolation final but lost this one with 6-2 6-4
Second tournament was the Medibank Age (Gold JT) which was played at Sydney Olympic Park.
She had to play the qualifications first, but made it to the main draw. Won her first round main draw, but then had problems with the elbow so wasn’t 100% in the following matches.

"The parents and Wanaka community support in donating so many items and services for the silent and live auctions was wonderful," said Doug Clarke, co-ordinator of the fundraiser.
Coach of 10 years, Perry Crockett was acknowledged for his success in having 5 or 6 Wanaka Juniors representing the Southern Region at the Nationals over the last two years.
As guest speaker, Perry entertained with anecdotes from his professional playing experiences. He then teamed up with Michael Geologo, ranked 3rd in New Zealand 12 and unders, in an exhibition match with top club players Ian Jurczyluk and Richard Anderson.
The finals of the Junior Club Championships were then played. Annie Timu pushed Ines Stephanie to a super tie-breaker with Ines prevailing to win the Girls Singles. Two Wanaka Tennis Juniors Qualify for 2014 Junior Masters

On 10 October 2014, it was announced by Jan Shearer, Head of Performance at Tennis New Zealand, that 2 of our juniors, Michael Gealogo and Ines Stephani, have been invited to play in the Junior Masters Tournament to be held 25-27th October at the Renouf Centre, Wellington.
Our Coach, Perry Crockett, explains more:
"I saw an email from Steven Stephani and wanted to give some more detail around this accomplishment so that you can all fully appreciate what a big deal it is.
There are over 1000 juniors on the Tennis NZ 12/U Configure Ranking List in both boys and girls and over 100 of them have scored points in the Masters Points Races which are based on tournament results from all over NZ for a 12 month period. The bigger the tournament the more points are on offer.
Ines has qualified as 3rd and Michael as 5th in New Zealand. It is an impressive effort and has been the result of a lot of hard work and sacrifice. The Masters Tournament is a stepping stone to selection for New Zealand teams and both of them have a good shot at making this level.
I am really proud of them and I think as a club we should be very proud to have kids reach this level.
As their coach, and along with Steven Stephani, I am very grateful for the support from the committee and those generous members who have supported their coaching and made it possible for them to have the time with me that they need to be successful at a National Level."

Quadrangular Tournament ~ Sat/Sun 12 & 13 April 2014

Wanaka Tennis Vets held their annual Quadrangular teams tournament last weekend. Vigorous competitive tennis was enjoyed as teams of 12 kept warm in the unusually cold conditions.
Wanaka, ably led by Club Captain Doug Clarke, won all 3 fixtures against Upper Clutha 10-2, South Canterbury 8-4, and Southland 10-2. Upper Clutha, a combination team of Cromwell and Wanaka players drew with South Canterbury 6-6 but won on games count back 86-76 and outplayed Southland 8-4.
The biggest smile of the day belonged to 76 year old Don Kindley playing for Wanaka as he mentored much younger players to win all 6 of his doubles and mixed doubles matches.
The event concluded on Sunday with around 50 participants enjoying a barbecue in the sun.

Wanaka Senior 35+ Tournament ~ 9 & 10 January 2014
After seven rain interrupted and windy days for our Open and Junior Tournaments, we enjoyed two beautiful days of men’s, women’s and mixed doubles tennis.
This year visiting players dominated in closely fought contests with local players winning six of the seven finals. Only club Captain Doug Clarke and Barbara Provan saved our blushes by winning the B grade mixed doubles.
Lea Mulvey showed why she is Southland’s #1 veteran as she paired with Anne Milne to win the Women’s A grade, then with brother Mike Milne from Auckland to win the Mixed A grade. Her brothers Mike and Chris also took out the Men’s A grade.
Dunedin players Denise Coulston and Jacky McCutcheon won the Women’ B grade and then Denise paired with Ian Moore to celebrate his 70th birthday by winning the 120+ mixed doubles. Oamaru pair, John Macdonald and Michael Forgie won the 120+ Men’s doubles.
Our generous sponsor, Quartz Reef Wines, provided the prizes presented by Trevor Scott as we made good use of the sun to relax and sample his wine after two excellent days.

Report of the Gallaway Cook Allan Open Tournament and the Head Junior Tournament, Jan 2013
The Wanaka Tennis Club has had a busy week hosting the 2013 Head Wanaka Junior Open from January 2-4 and the Galloway Cook Allan Wanaka Open January 5-7. The Junior Tournament included 99 kids from all over NZ and even 12 visiting players from Australia. Due to the size of the draws the tournament is played at the club and 12 other courts around Wanaka.
The highlights for Wanaka came in the 10 and Under Girls Singles where Wanaka’s Polly Marshall was the winner and the 14 and Under Girls Doubles where Meg Timu and Olivia Ray were the champions. Meg was a close runner up in the singles going down 10-8 in a deciding 3rd set tie-break. Ines Stephani and Danielle Molloy were runners up in the 12 and Under Doubles losing in another 3rd set tie-breaker.
The Open Tournaments had the largest and highest quality draws ever seen in Wanaka. The University of California Berkeley brought over 12 players, plus coaches and managers and even the coach’s son adding 15 top level players to the event. The team were taking their pre-season trip to Queenstown due to the fact that their number one player Ben McLachlan and Team Captain Riki McLachlan are brothers from Queenstown. The team is ranked 13th in the highly competitive US College Tennis Circuit. Ben is ranked 16th individually and is one of New Zealand’s brightest tennis prospects.
The team were delayed flying out from San Francisco and were forced to get straight off the plane in Queenstown after an overnight in Auckland and drive over for their first match on Sunday morning. “I was really impressed at how well they handled the number of matches in the heat” commented tournament organiser and local coach Perry Crockett “They did not complain once and were very respectful of all of their opponents”.
Head Coach Peter Wright said he could not believe how beautiful the town was and what a great atmosphere there was at the club. He was particularly impressed by the amount of support given by volunteers during the days of the event.
Local favourites Ben and Riki took out the doubles final against Berkeley team mates Gregory Bayane of France and Denmark Davis Cup player Chris Konigsfeldt. The brothers have been in great form recently winning the New Zealand Senior Doubles Title in Auckland. They turned down a wild card into the Heineken Open to join their team mates at the Wanaka Open. Ben then took the court in the singles final facing the Frenchman Gregory Bayane. In tough windy conditions the play was extremely high quality with some massive serving from both players impressing the crowd of over 100 tennis enthusiasts. Ben’s powerful game proved too much for Bayane winning 6-3 6-3 and showing why many believe he has the potential to be successful as a professional after college.
The women’s final was also a top level match up with defending champion Libby Scott from Dunedin coming from 4 set points down in the first set to win 7-5 6-3 against New Zealand Junior Team member Annabel Ellis. Libby is currently playing for Coastal Carolina in US College Tennis and is in Wanaka for the Christmas break with her family who have a holiday home here.
The success for Queenstown continued when Suma Ito and Hannah Speight took out Libby Scott and Georgia Hume from Dunedin in an entertaining Women’s Final 6-4 4-6 10-8.
At the conclusion of the final match some of the crowd were invited to have a go at returning some of the big serves of the Berkeley players. Local juniors were particularly excited and some even managed to get them back into the court. “It has been really inspiring for the juniors at the club to come out and see how well these guys play. They are great role models not only because they are such good players, but the way they behave on the court sets a great example for the kids. They will be out here tomorrow practicing their shots I am sure.”

Quartz Reef Wines Open Senior Vets Tournament Report 2013.
Dogged by inclement weather, participants battled on in both rain and sunshine to give some finality to the games played and to enable us to produce an end result.
The eventual winners and runners up were found by calculating the number of games conceded in each of the participated events. Our thanks are accorded Rhian Nicholl, club captain and Tournament Controller, for her sound managing of the Tournament under trying conditions..
We were fortunate to have a contingent of players from Christchurch who gave the Tournament a more competitive edge and who were well rewarded for their efforts.
The success of any Tournament can be calculated by the number of entries received, the sponsorship gained, the willingness of volunteers, and of course the weather.
We had some 60 entries and acknowledge the efforts of President John Lyness in managing the entries prior to his departure for overseas.
Quartz Reef Wines were our head sponsor and their generous support in providing quality wines as prizes was much appreciated and in no small way contributed to the financial success of the Tournament.
Grateful thanks to Life member and sponsor Trevor Scott for his generosity. At the conclusion of the Tournament a Magnum of Quartz Reef Bubbles and a speciality Quartz Reef Pinot Noir were auctioned in support of Club funds. Thanks to auctioneer Don Kindley, it was sheer entertainment.
The club acknowledges the support of Maude Wines, Mediterranean Market, Central Lakes Physio, and Wanaka Beerworks.
To the members and supporters who provided baking, manned the kitchen throughout the event, and diligently assisted when and where they identified a need, we say thank you, you are all legends.
